Fang Zhang

Zhang Fang is a professor of piano in the Piano Department at Shenyang Conservatory of Music, a Master’s Supervisor in Piano Performance, former Chair of the Piano Department, and a Yamaha Artist. She has also served as a Council Member of the Liaoning Provincial Musicians Association and the China Piano Society.
Over many years of dedicated teaching, Professor Zhang has continually refined her pedagogical approach and achieved remarkable results. Many of her students have won top prizes in national and international competitions, including the Eastman International Young Artists Piano Competition in Rochester, USA; the “Xinghai Cup” National Children & Youth Piano Competition in Beijing; the National Youth Piano Competition in Xiamen; the Kawai National Piano Competition in Xiamen; the Asian Chopin International Piano Competition in Tokyo; the Hong Kong (Asia) Piano Open Competition; the TOYAMA Asia Youth Piano Competition; the “Cadenza” National Youth Chinese Piano Works Competition in Beijing; and the German Öttingen International Piano Open Finals.
In addition to her rigorous teaching schedule, she actively participates in conservatory and public performances. She has collaborated as an accompanist in solo concerts with musicians from the United States and Europe, and has been invited to give lectures in numerous cities, including Harbin, Changchun, Dalian, Jiamusi, Guiyang, Yangzhou, Wuhan, and regions across Inner Mongolia.
During her tenure as Chair of the Piano Department, Professor Zhang worked diligently to create a supportive learning environment, expand students’ opportunities for stage practice, and strengthen the development of core courses in piano performance. Under her leadership, Shenyang Conservatory of Music successfully held nine consecutive sessions of the “Shenyin Cup” Piano Competition. She advocates broadening students’ professional horizons, reinforcing foundational training, and continuously renewing pedagogical approaches through teaching practice.
In 2006, she was invited to present a solo recital and masterclass at International University of Malaya-Wales, formerly known as International University College of Technology Twintech, in Malaysia. That same year, as a delegate of Shenyang Conservatory of Music, she traveled to the United States and performed at Indiana State University and Columbus State University. She has also been invited on multiple occasions to lecture at the University of Wyoming.
In 2014, she was named one of the inaugural Yamaha China Artists. In 2015, she was invited to teach at the Summer International Music Festival at the University of Utah. In 2016, as a Yamaha Artist, she gave a masterclass at Tokyo College of Music in Japan. Since 2017, she has served as a faculty member and performing artist at the Beijing International Music Festival & Academy.
In 2019, she was invited to lecture at Missouri State University in the United States. That same year, she participated as a faculty member and performer at the New Zealand International Youth Arts Festival. She was later invited to serve as a faculty artist for the 2025 New Zealand International Young Musicians Festival Chamber Music Program and the 2026 New Zealand International Young Musicians Festival, organized by the New Zealand Philharmonic Society.
Professor Zhang is frequently invited to serve as a jury member for major national and international piano competitions, including the Chinese Golden Bell Award for Music, the “Xinghai Cup” National Children & Youth Piano Competition, the Steinway National Youth Piano Competition, the Yamaha Academy Award National Piano Competition, the Kawai National Piano Competition, the Kaiserburg National Youth Piano Competition, the Asia Youth Piano Competition, the German Irmler Piano Open, the Youth Piano Competition of the European Union National Music Academies, Huanglong Music Season, and the Steingraeber & Söhne Cup National Youth Piano Competition.
